Construction Frustrates Neighbours of Central Saanich Farm

CENTRAL SAANICH - A strip of Vantreight Farm resembled a construction zone today, as truck loads of blast rock were layered on top of clay to prevent erosion. Friday, top soil was scraped off the land which may one day become an access road to Vantreight's hill development. "The only thing we intended to do was take the topsoil off to have it distributed in the fields in the spring," says owner Ian Vantreight. But when Central Saanich realized Vantreight didn't have the proper permits, the municipality issued a stop work order halting excavation. Vantreight says it was all a misunderstanding. "Due to a communications breakdown between C1 Contracting and Central Saanich, C1 didn't follow up on getting the permits they needed," says Vantreight. One week ago council cleared the way for Vantreight to develop a 30 acre piece of unfarmable land. Neighbours who can see and hear the dump trucks from their yards are outraged. "How about respecting the bylaws?" asks Heather Gartshore, "The Vantreight's aren't above the law like everybody else, and I would just like to see them go about the process in the way that every other resident would be expected to do so." Vantreight says the work will be complete by the end of the day. In the meantime he apologizes if anyone got upset. "I sincerely apologize," says Vantreight, " It was not my intent to get any backs up."
